PHASE1 CONTINUATION

Documentation for PHASE1_CONTINUATION from the Foundation repository.

Phase 1 Continuation - Foundation Infrastructure Completion

Quick Start Instructions for New Context

To continue this work from a fresh context, read these documents in order:

  1. PLAN_0001.md - Complete architecture vision and target structure
  2. 087_FOUNDATION_MABEAM_DEPENDENCY_ELIMINATION.md - Dependency analysis (for background)
  3. PLAN.md - Current implementation strategy and fresh start approach
  4. WORKLOG.md - Progress tracking and completed phases
  5. This document (PHASE1_CONTINUATION.md) - Current status and next steps

Critical Context - What We Did:

  • MOVED old code to lib/foundation_old/ and lib/mabeam_old/ as reference
  • Created FRESH implementations in lib/foundation/, lib/jido_foundation/, lib/mabeam/
  • Fresh start approach instead of dependency cleanup (saves weeks of work)
  • Following PLAN_0001.md architecture with TDD approach

WORKLOG.md Instructions:

  • APPEND ONLY - Never edit existing entries
  • Format: ## YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM UTC - Phase X.Y Description
  • Log EVERY completion with bullet points of what was accomplished
  • Include file paths, line counts, and key features implemented
  • Log when starting new phases and when creating documentation

Then execute: “Read these docs and proceed with Phase 1 continuation using TDD approach”

CRITICAL: WE MOVED OLD CODE, IMPLEMENTED FRESH, ZERO DEPENDENCY VIOLATIONS

TDD Implementation Strategy

Pattern: Implementation → Tests → Missing Services → Tests → Missing Services → Tests

This ensures each component is validated before building dependencies, following true TDD principles.

Next Implementation Phases

🎯 Phase 1.4: Infrastructure Services

Target: Agent-aware circuit breakers, rate limiters, enhanced telemetry

1.4.1 Implementation Step

Create these files in lib/foundation/infrastructure/:

  • agent_circuit_breaker.ex - Circuit breaker with agent context
  • agent_rate_limiter.ex - Rate limiting per agent
  • resource_manager.ex - Agent resource monitoring

1.4.2 Test Step

Create comprehensive tests:

  • test/foundation/infrastructure/agent_circuit_breaker_test.exs
  • test/foundation/infrastructure/agent_rate_limiter_test.exs
  • test/foundation/infrastructure/resource_manager_test.exs

🎯 Phase 1.5: Foundation Services

Target: Services referenced by Application but not yet implemented

1.5.1 Implementation Step

Create these files in lib/foundation/services/:

  • config_server.ex - Configuration management
  • event_store.ex - Event persistence and querying
  • telemetry_service.ex - Enhanced telemetry with agent metrics

1.5.2 Test Step

Create service tests:

  • test/foundation/services/config_server_test.exs
  • test/foundation/services/event_store_test.exs
  • test/foundation/services/telemetry_service_test.exs

🎯 Phase 1.6: Enhanced Telemetry

Target: Cross-layer observability with agent-specific metrics

1.6.1 Implementation Step

Enhance lib/foundation/telemetry.ex with:

  • Agent lifecycle tracking
  • Multi-agent coordination metrics
  • Distribution-ready telemetry events

1.6.2 Test Step

Create telemetry integration tests:

  • test/foundation/telemetry_test.exs
  • test/foundation/telemetry_integration_test.exs

🎯 Phase 1.7: Coordination Service

Target: Service wrapper for coordination primitives (referenced in Application)

1.7.1 Implementation Step

Create lib/foundation/coordination/service.ex:

  • GenServer wrapper for coordination primitives
  • Service lifecycle management
  • Health monitoring integration

1.7.2 Test Step

Create coordination service tests:

  • test/foundation/coordination/service_test.exs
  • test/foundation/coordination/primitives_integration_test.exs

🎯 Phase 1.8: Types and Error System

Target: Unified types and error handling

1.8.1 Implementation Step

Create lib/foundation/types/:

  • error.ex - Unified error system for entire framework
  • agent_info.ex - Agent metadata structures
  • event.ex - Event type definitions

1.8.2 Test Step

Create type system tests:

  • test/foundation/types/error_test.exs
  • test/foundation/types/agent_info_test.exs

Implementation Guidelines

Code Quality Standards

  • Documentation: Every module must have comprehensive @moduledoc with examples
  • Type Specs: All public functions must have @spec declarations
  • Error Handling: Use unified error types, graceful degradation
  • Logging: Structured logging with appropriate levels
  • Distribution-Ready: All APIs designed for eventual clustering

TDD Test Requirements

  • Unit Tests: Test individual functions and modules
  • Integration Tests: Test service interactions and coordination
  • Property Tests: Use StreamData for complex coordination scenarios
  • Performance Tests: Verify scalability to 1000+ agents
  • Error Scenario Tests: Test failure modes and recovery

File Naming Conventions

  • Modules: snake_case.ex matching module names
  • Tests: *_test.exs with comprehensive coverage
  • Integration: *_integration_test.exs for cross-module testing

Testing Strategy

Test Structure Template

defmodule Foundation.SomeModule.Test do
  use ExUnit.Case, async: true

  alias Foundation.SomeModule

  describe "basic functionality" do
    # Unit tests
  end

  describe "agent integration" do
    # Agent-aware functionality tests
  end

  describe "error scenarios" do
    # Error handling and recovery tests
  end

  describe "performance" do
    # Load and scalability tests
  end
end

Integration Test Requirements

  • Start Foundation.Application in test mode
  • Register test agents with metadata
  • Test coordination scenarios
  • Verify telemetry events
  • Test failure recovery

Ready for Phase 2

Once Phase 1 is complete, we’ll have:

  • Pure, tested Foundation infrastructure
  • Zero application coupling
  • Agent-aware capabilities throughout
  • Distribution-ready architecture
  • Comprehensive observability

This provides the solid foundation needed for Phase 2 (Jido Integration) and Phase 3 (MABEAM Reconstruction).

Current Next Action

Execute Phase 1.4.1: Implement Infrastructure Services

  • Start with lib/foundation/infrastructure/agent_circuit_breaker.ex
  • Reference old Foundation code for patterns
  • Focus on agent context integration
  • Follow PLAN_0001.md specifications

Command for new context: “Read the required docs and proceed with Phase 1.4.1 - implement agent_circuit_breaker.ex following the TDD approach”
